Life in the 1400s

  • Dec. 5th, 2008 at 3:05 PM

So I have chosen the 15th century to study for my world, and it is so interesting!  There are some interesting, and odd, things they did back then... like the fact that they rubbed blood on freckles to 'cure' them... hahaha... I went through 'cures,' food, heraldry, weapons and armor, and some other random things.  Now I will be focusing on castles... I already learned a lot from the first book I was reading, like various terminology along with different jobs that were in the castle at that time... also, there was a lot of weapon and armor terminology... which was interesting... :)

Go initiative!!!

So, I went to the library today to get some research materials for my book.  I will loosely base it off of the 15th century, so I had to get some books with information.  I got a lot of insight to the kind of food they ate, clothes they wore, etiquette, and more... it has been very interesting as well as informative.  I want to make my book as detailed and prepared as well as can be.  :)

Too much research

Now comes my world-building stage... blah!  I am slightly fearing this part, because there will be a lot of researching on my part to not only create a world, but make the things that happen within it believable... So, I know that it is necessary, but I'm also kind of blah about it... :)

New blog

Okay, so I just started a blog.  While this is focused on me writing my book, my blog will just be all things random.  Check it out if you so feel inclined  :)

Blank Slate

Well, I haven't posted anything recently, so I thought that I should... though I've not really done much more on my book yet...  : \
However, I have recently arranged my thoughts into an understandable format, so that is good... scatterbrained thoughts don't exactly work with everyone, haha.

My own muse?

  • Nov. 9th, 2008 at 8:34 AM

So, it seems that as I talk to people about my book, I tend to create more of it on the spot, but it flows amazingly well... so, I am like my own muse, but only if I'm talking to someone else about the book... haha... :p

More History

  • Nov. 6th, 2008 at 8:36 PM

Okay, so I'm kind of excited now!  Even though I still don't know how I will be casting magic, I have started to go into detail of how the history story plot will be going (only people who have asked me what the book is about will really understand what I mean).  I've decided on some mainH character traits and the reason that the king will become open to friendship with him... :)  Still not much going on for my current time main character's story, as it will pretty much be based on how magic is used!  >.<  I can't really start it at all without that, considering the first main plot point is dealing with a mishap in magic... hm... gotta keep the brain thinking...
At least I'm not so frustrated, now that I am working on the historical plot now...

Only, I'm sort of looking forward to and dreading the time when I will have to actually make the world... it will be so hard figuring out where the different land masses and terrains are, where the rivers flow, how the shape of the land is, how many countries, all of their leaderships and characteristics... I thought I wasn't going to have to do that for the first book, but with mainH traveling around, he needs to see SOMETHING, I guess, haha... :)  Lots and lots of brainstorming!!!

History

  • Nov. 6th, 2008 at 3:15 PM

Well, the history section of my book is coming along great... I had some good ideas for it, and the characters, and it seems to be going smoothly... at least decently smoothly... however, I'm starting to snag... I can't figure out just how I want the magic to work in this land... and that molds the entire story!  Different ways of casting magic can change the whole plot, because some things can be done with certain forms of casting, and some cannot.  Also, it could change what they call magic, what they call those who can use, what they call those who cannot, etc. etc. etc... bah!  The worst snag!  I've had a few ideas here and there, but am unsure of which I should follow through with.  The way that magic is cast could totally make or break a book all on its own!  --_--

Refresh

Okay, so it has been forever since I've written anything here... damn life... I had been so wrapped up with work (conventions and traveling), getting sick, and doing Jury Duty, that I hadn't had much time to think about the book...  While I've scratched that previous page written, I have gotten a pretty decent idea flowing in my head, so I'm a bit excited.  It's in its rough stages right now, but if anyone is interested in hearing about it, let me know... feedback is always welcome, though don't nag be about lack of detail, that part is still coming... :)

The start of... well... something

  • Jun. 11th, 2008 at 11:40 PM

Okay, so I got a whim and wrote a page as a starter... not sure how it's going in my eyes, but, we'll see... :)  I'll have to have a few people look over it and see if the intro is a theme that could work... ho-hum...

Welcoming thoughts...

  • Jun. 9th, 2008 at 8:44 PM

So, I am totally up to thoughts and suggestions on some things for my book to get my brain reeling...

First, I'm trying to think of the way that people cast magic in my book.  I'm hoping to find some kind of unique way of casting to use for my book.  My favorite so far is the way Robert Jordan acts like the elements are threads that are sewn together to make a spell.  I thought that was awesome!  It was unique (at least, that I know of) and was very interesting, poetic/artistic... and I just LOVED it... Anyways, if anyone has some thoughts, send them my way...

The start of my journey

  • Jun. 7th, 2008 at 6:55 PM

So, I have decided to go ahead and write a book like I've always wanted.  I am starting to brainstorm not just plot ideas, but characters, the world and its cities, and the way that I would like magic to be cast.  Of course with me, it must be a fantasy, and there's no way around that (haha).  In addition, I would probably make short stories during the process, because the best way to actually have a book published would be to have some smaller works already published (it would give me a kind of resume).  So, here I start my journey... researching various weapons, trades, crafts, clothing, etc. of the middle-ages, to be able to place everything into the correct time period as I create my world... which, as of yet, is blank (haha).  I have a few thoughts on how I would like to cast magic, but I would like to think of a few more... to keep my options open, so as I think of a suitable plot, I can see if the laws of the magic I would like will compliment the story or be a hindrance to it...
